ISTJ is the watching side, ESFP the watched. ISTJ's logic of order reaches ESFP's weakest place. ISTJ means no harm, and ESFP cannot settle.
ISTJ × ESFP is the Supervision (supervisor) relation, one of the sixteen. A casual word lands with great weight.
Written as ESFP × ISTJ it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Logistician and the Entertainer.
ISTJ builds order and judges by logic. ESFP pushes and takes, and charms people. ISTJ's "by the rules, it's like this" reaches the place where ESFP does not want logic questioned. Before ISTJ, ESFP learns that their charm does not get through.
ISTJ's "logic that builds order" is ESFP's point of least resistance. A judgement that is obvious to ISTJ is engraved deep in ESFP as approval or rejection. Augustinavičiūtė called this "one-sided vulnerability". ISTJ does not know it, and only feels they are saying the right thing.
Augustinavičiūtė wrote that there is not enough observational data on the supervision relation. What is known: the supervisor reaches the supervisee's point of least resistance directly; if the signal is positive it is very pleasant, and if negative, even a light one is very unpleasant.
A word about the rules cancels charm.
When ESFP counters with the ethics of distance between people, ISTJ receives it with the rules. ESFP's charm does not work on ISTJ; ISTJ's rules work on ESFP. A one-way match.
ESFP has one advantage too. Their second, "ethics of distance between people", sits above ISTJ's third. When ESFP produces it, ISTJ's role collapses, and ISTJ pushes back with a flood of words. ESFP's first, "force that pushes and takes", sits where ISTJ cannot understand, so ISTJ finds ESFP a little mysterious and a little frightening.
ESFP tries to escape by challenging ISTJ in public, but it does not work. With ISTJ as the boss, formal rank supports it and it runs. With ESFP as the boss, it clashes the moment superiority is asserted.
Charming. They go and take.
Not enough logic.
Their words and actions surprise you.
Solid. Correct.
They judge by the rules.
Charm does not work on this person.
Even in a good relationship, the supervisee feels the other as "someone so fussy it is repellent". Suddenly, without hesitation, they step into private territory. The supervisor is only turning attention, without hesitation, to what concerns their leading function: Augustinavičiūtė's observation.
The supervisee tries to escape the protection by arguing back or assigning work to the supervisor in public. The attempt usually does not work, the record says.
In marriage it takes the form of "rabbit and boa", and divorce is common. Between parent and child there is no escape, and it is most dangerous. With the boss as supervisor, formal rank supports it and it runs naturally; with the subordinate as supervisor, it clashes the moment superiority is asserted: Slinko's observation.
Joseph Stalin (LSI) × Franklin D. Roosevelt (SEE)
Typing: both types agree across several published sources
The president thought "I can handle Stalin" and tried to move him by charm and personal trust. He made concession after concession at the conferences and felt he had won the other's approval. The charm did not reach, and the side of rules and system got what it got.
What matches: the supervisee's charm not working on the supervisor; craving approval.
