A pleasant partner to rest with. You are in the same place, a little removed from reality. But shake it a little, and it breaks.
ENTP and INFP compatibility in brief (love, work, friendship)
ENTP × INFP is the Illusionary relation, one of the sixteen. Time with no need to hurry is there.
LoveIt begins like a summer-resort romance.WorkGood for intellectual play. Weak where responsibility is.Friends & conversationPleasant. Until reality comes up.
Written as INFP × ENTP it is the same pair. In 16Personalities terms, the Debater and the Mediator.
Both intuitive types, alike in being removed from reality. Worldviews are close and intellectual play matches. ENTP's erudition and the heat of INFP's imagination are exchanged, and sympathy arises without effort.
In terms of the mechanism, ENTP's second position, "logic that carries an idea through", lands in INFP's sixth; INFP's second, "emotion that moves the room", lands in ENTP's sixth. The sixth is a place you produce with a little effort, and it feels good when the other fills it lightly. The ease of resting together comes from this way of entering.
The observation says the beginning is dominated by an ease without obligations, like a summer-resort romance.
The illusion is very fragile and breaks at the smallest shake.
Waiting for the other's protecting strength
Each expects a protecting strength from the other, and neither can produce it. INFP unconsciously wants the authority of a pushing type; ENTP cannot play it and looks weak by comparison. INFP tries to draw out a leader's reaction by humiliating ENTP, and fails.
But the first position does not reach. ENTP's "eye that sees possibilities" is INFP's seventh, which they let pass; INFP's "intuition that reads the flow" sits in the same place for ENTP. What the other values most, you know, and make light of. And the "bodily comfort" ENTP wants most is INFP's third; the "force that pushes through" INFP wants is ENTP's third. It comes when asked, and does not last. Good as a place to rest, thin as a place to lean on. That is the shape of the illusionary relation.
The handling of pleasure differs too. ENTP thinks sharing pleasure is a duty; INFP thinks pleasure is the reward of strength, and does not give it to the weak. Money, relationships and food are hidden separately. ENTP feels that as theft of their rights.
INFP sees ENTP's opportunities sharply and takes them; ENTP abandons small fights; INFP strikes there. When someone intervenes from outside, the short-term problem is solved and the infantilisation deepens.
How each sees the other
ENTP → INFP
Imaginative. You can play together.
They ask you for a protecting strength.
They hide pleasures separately.
INFP → ENTP
Erudite, and interesting.
Weak. No leader's reaction comes.
They leave opportunities lying.
What has been recorded
SCENE 01By the lake
Two young people who met at a summer camp avoided their work duties and spent all day by the lake. They allowed each other to avoid responsibility without guilt, the record says.
SCENE 02In a room the parents furnished
Living in a furnished room the parents provided, the wife owned a recipe book and did not cook, and the mother-in-law brought the meals. The husband disappeared for two or three days, saying it was work, the record says.
SCENE 03Who broke it
On the day of the birth the husband was detained; after release he did not return home, never bonded with the child, and paid no support. Both blamed the parents for breaking what had been a pleasant romance, the record says.
Love, living together, work, family: scene by scene
ConversationPleasant. Until reality comes up.
RomanceIt begins like a summer-resort romance.
Living togetherThe force to push comes from no one.
WorkGood for intellectual play. Weak where responsibility is.
FamilyOutside intervention infantilises.
If you keep going
Do not lean on outsiders
Parental intervention makes short-term solutions and long-term infantilisation.
Do not ask for strength
Neither has it.
Do not hide pleasures
ENTP feels it as theft.
For these two
How to meet ── In a place of rest
A relation in which you need not hurry. A trip, a hot spring, a long holiday. It is not found in places where people are hurrying.
Approach ── Do not invite; just be beside them
The less these two move, the better. An active approach breaks the place of rest. Spending the same time in the same place is itself the way closer.
A date ── Hot springs, naps, a long breakfast
A day of nothing. No plans. These two are no help when in trouble, so pick a day with no trouble.
Gifts ── for ENTP, Comfort; for INFP, Deciding, and taking them along
For ENTP: A good blanket, good food, things that ease the body. What ENTP does not buy for themselves. For INFP: Less a thing than a date fixed and an outing. What INFP is waiting for is a force that pushes.
PROne thing for this relation
A relation with time that need not hurry, so tools for resting.
It begins like a summer-resort romance. More under "Love, living together, work, family: scene by scene" and "If you keep going".
Do ENTP and INFP work well together?
Good for intellectual play. Weak where responsibility is. More under "Love, living together, work, family: scene by scene" and "If you keep going".
This pair is the illusionary relation, one of the sixteen. How the relation itself arises, and how to tell it from the others, is on the relation page.
The two Model A's: what talks to what
ENTP on the left, INFP on the right. Each shows where the eight elements sit; lines connect the same element. Where each line starts and ends decides what happens in this relation.
Lines connect the same element in the other person's structure. 1–2 (strong) 3 (role) 4 (vulnerable) 5–6 (wanted) 7–8 (capable, indifferent)
1 → 7NeENTP's 1 (leading) Ne (extraverted intuition) sits in INFP's position 7 (ignoring). INFP can do what ENTP is good at but does not value it. ENTP feels slightly unappreciated.
2 → 6TiENTP's 2 (creative) Ti (introverted logic) sits in INFP's position 6 (mobilizing). What ENTP produces naturally is what INFP has been waiting for. The most comfortable flow.
3 → 5SeENTP's 3 (role) Se (extraverted sensing) sits in INFP's position 5 (suggestive). ENTP is weak here and INFP wants it. A gap neither can fill.
4 → 8FiENTP's 4 (vulnerable) Fi (introverted ethics) sits in INFP's position 8 (demonstrative). INFP quietly covers ENTP's weak point. For INFP it is nothing.
5 → 3SiENTP's 5 (suggestive) Si (introverted sensing) sits in INFP's position 3 (role). What ENTP asks for is INFP's weakest point. The more ENTP asks, the smaller INFP gets.
6 → 2FeENTP's 6 (mobilizing) Fe (extraverted ethics) sits in INFP's position 2 (creative). INFP constantly supplies what ENTP wants. Where ENTP relaxes.
7 → 1NiENTP's 7 (ignoring) Ni (introverted intuition) sits in INFP's position 1 (leading). INFP's main field is one ENTP does not care about. Little friction, little interest.
8 → 4TeENTP's 8 (demonstrative) Te (extraverted logic) sits in INFP's position 4 (vulnerable). ENTP could protect INFP's weak point but is not inclined to. Will if asked.
